In Eight Minutes, I Could...
"Stupid Urahara.." Rukia muttered, "I wish for once I could go into that store without having to return something," she had had to go to that stupid man's stupid shop to return a stupid box of somafixers she bought and, luckily before taking them, discovered he had given her the wrong packege! Now she came home with a replacement box and a fully-charged phone, free of charge... "I'm just WAITING for this rip-off to break..." she muttered as she glared at the plastic bag in her hand, that man was honestly so suspecious sometimes... and he always did something sneaky behind her back...
"I'm home!" Rukia shouted as she walked in through the door and kicked her shoes off, "Ichigo? You here?!" "I'm in the shower!" she heard back, she sighed and nodded slowly, heading upstairs and walking into his bedroom, "That stupid merchant better not have done anything weird..." she muttered as she dumped the little bag out on the bed, being surprised to find that in with the Somafixers and repaired cell phone... there was a pocket watch... an everyday, run of the mill, gold pocket watch, slightly confused and very curious, she sat down and opened it up, shocked to find that instead of having two hands... it had four... and the back fell open as well; this side of the clock also had four hands, she blinked, putting it on her lap and looking down to see a small note sitting next to her, "Hmm..." she muttered, opening it and starting to read
"To the user of this clock-
You may have noticed that this pocket watch is not like many; the reason for that is that it is not a pocket watch, it is actually a device used to alter time, with this watch you may go back in time, to any time you want, and change the events there for eight minutes and eight minutes only, but note that it can only be used once for each person, good luck -Annonymous
-To choose a date, place the longest hand on side A on the month; put the shortest on the date, if the date exceeds the twelth, put the second shortest hand on the second number; for the year, move the remaining hand around the clock face for how many years you want to go back
-To choose a time, simply move the hands in the same way on side B
-To perminantly change time, place all eight hands on twelve and close the pocket watch
-To erase your decision, place all eight hands on six and close the pocket watch
-To preveiw changes that your decision will make, put the hands on side A on twelve, and the hands on side B on six
-Be certain of your decision before you change time, you will not get to change your mind nor remember anything past the choosen date
"Hmm..." Rukia muttered, "I wonder if this really works..." there was only one way to find out... if it DID work then so would the rules... right? She set the date and time to one hour ago wen Ichigo stole her popsicle, and suddenly a flash of light struck her eyes and she was standing at the refridgerator, hand in the freezer as Ichigo walkedd up and snatched the popsicle she was reaching for, "It works..." she wispered, he tilted his head, "Wat works?" she blinked, "Nothing..." she muttered, re-setting the time and date on the pocket watch
Rukia's eyes opened, it was THAT night... the night that Kaien died... and she was watching him fight.... 'I am going to change this...' she thought, making sure the clock was safely inside her shirt, "Run Rukia!" Ukitake shouted as she saw her former officer charge towards her, now possessed by a hollow, her breath was quick and heavy as she ran, tears spilling from her orchid eyes, 'Now...' she told herself, reluctantly stopping and turning around, the hollow laughed and cackled maniaclly as she stood still, "So you're giving up!?" it hissed, 'Yes...' she thought to herself, 'I AM giving up...' she brought her sword down to her side and reluctantly dropped it to the ground below, "RUKIA!!" her captain shouted, she didn't move, she didn't say anything, she just closed her eyes and waited for the impact, but nothing happened... nothing... except the warm splatter of blood hitting her face.... her eyes shot open and she found that her captain's sword.... had been plunged through Kaien's chest... exterminating the hollow for good... her eyes started to water, "No..." she muttered, "NO!!" "Rukia-" "NO!!! Kaien-Sir!!!!" she shouted at the top of her lungs, "Kaien-Sir! Kaien-Sir! Kaien-Sir!!!" she screamed, trying to rush to his body... but her captain restrained her... "Kaien-Sir..." she wispered, sniffing lightly, 'No..' she thought, 'I can't believe this.. how could the outcome have been the same?!' she wondered, 'But atleast.... atleast wen it was me..... I did get to say goodbye.....'
Rukia bit her lip lightly, she was back... in Ichigo's room.. sitting on his bed with the pocket watch in her lap... 'I wonder...' she thought, thinking back to all the mistakes she had made in the past, 'Could it have been avoided... if I didn't hurt someone else...?' she wondered as she set the pocket watch to a new date and time
In the blink of an eye she was back to all those years ago... before she was a Soul Reaper... before she was a Kuchiki... actually, that was the subject at hand... "I think it'll be great Rukia!" Renji encouraged happily, she shook her head, "Renji... I don't want to be a Kuchiki," he blinked, "Wat?" "I said I don't want to be a Kuchiki," she repeated, "I heard you but... why not?" Renji asked, purely astounded by hearing that his freind, who had been orphaned and left on the streets as he had, was going to turn down a life of luxary... "I don't think things would be the same," she said honestly, "I don't think... I would be allowed the luxaries I have now," "Like?" "Like getting to have my own freinds," she said, smiling slightly at him, "Rukia-" "I'm going to tell them no Renji," "Are you sure...?" "I'm sure," she replied, and at that moment time stopped around her and she pulled the watch out of her pockt, 'If I change this...' she thought, 'Renji and I will never have that falling out... and Brother won't prevent me from moving up in my squad so maybe Kaien-Sir will live... maybe if I had a higher rank it could have been me and not him...' she thought, looking down at the pocket watch and turning it to the "Preveiw" settings
"Rukia! Why are you just standing here?" the young Soul Reaper turned around and smiled at Renji, "Hey," "Don't 'hey' me! You're gonna be late for your meeting!" "My... meeting?" "Yeah, your official Leiutenit's meeting, wouldn't want to be late for your first one would you?" she glanced at her arm and frowned, she was wearing the thirteenth squad's Leiutenit badge.... so Kaien must be dead... "I'll be right there," she muttered, glancing at the calender... it was April 23rd.... "Renji...?" "Hm?" "How long ago did you become a leiutenit?" he snorted, "This morning remember?" he asked, her eyes widened, 'Today is the day I'm supposed to meet Ichigo... two years before I find the pocket watch...' she mused, "Renji don't I have an important assignment to go on?" "Like?" "Like going to the living world to slay my first hollow ALONE?" "You did that two years ago," he laughed, she frowned, "Well who's monitoring Karakura Japan right now? I should go help them out-" "Rukia, there are no hollows there and lieutenits don't get dispatched to the living world for no reason, you're aware of that, why are you acting like this?" she frowned, "I'll be there in a minute Renji..." she muttered as he shrugged and walked on to the meeting, "If I never became a Kuchiki.... I was never held back in my ranks... and if I wasn't held back I never would have been sent on that assignment.... and then I never would have met Ichigo...." she pulled out her pocket watch and shook her head, she couldn't just let this go on... even if she had the very life she had WANTED two years ago.... to be freinds with Renji and have a good rank and a good LIFE...... it wasn't worth it... not ever having met Ichigo wouldn't be worth it... not just because of HER, but that would change his life too.. and it would change Uryuu's, and Orihime's and Renji's ..... it would change everyone's lives if she never met him because then he never would have become a Soul Reaper.... and Soul Society would probbably be in ruins if that hadn't happened... she turned the hands on the clock to send her back to the present and erase her decision, it wasn't worth having a few years of happiness versus suffering... she'd rather look forward to the years of bliss to come with him
Rukia sighed lightly as she stared at her pocket watch, she could still go back and change things.... but.... was anything worth changing? If she had never agreed to become a Kuchiki she never would have met Ichigo; if she had never killed Kaien then she never would have gotten to say goodbye and he would have died anyway... if she had just TOLD Ichigo that her Brother and Renji were after her on that night (the night she was arrested...) he never would have been hurt but... how far and how long could they have run before they were caught and exicuted on the spot? .. If she had decided to go back with Ichigo instead of staying in Soul Society to regain her powers she would have regretted it forever... because so many lives would have been taken because she wasn't there to save them... if Ichigo never got his hollow he wouldn't have won half of his fights.... if he never had lost his powers he never would have realized how much he needed them and how badly he WANTED them... he never would have grown the way he did... "Everything.... every small, insignificant incedent ... happens for a reason," she breathed as she stared at the clock, "And for me to want to change ANYTHING... for me to want to change FATE.... is incredably selfish," she concluded, 'And it would only end in my detriment anyway...' "Hey," she looked up and smiled at Ichigo as he walked into his room, "Wat's that you've got?" he asked, pointing to the watch, she smiled and opened his window, leaning against the wall and chucking the pocket watch as far as she could, watching it fly over the trees before closing the window again, "Nothing, just a mistake," she replied, he raised an eyebrow at her, "Is everything ok?" she nodded and slid off of the bed, walking towards him and wrapping her arms around his neck, "Yes," she laughed, "I wouldn't change a thing," she promised, sealing that with a kiss
